“The time is always right to do what is right.” ~ Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

WAMS staff together with WAMS Board Chair Rev. Linda Michel are assisting with the planning for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Breakfast in Worcester that will be held on January 17th. This includes collaborating with John Owanisian from United Congregational Church in Worcester and staff from the United Way of Central MA to organize the book drive that takes place in conjunction with the breakfast event. Our goal is to give age-appropriate books to young children in select Worcester public schools who many not have access to many books at home, keeping in mind the role that books at home play in building vocabulary, increasing awareness and comprehension and expanding horizons. This year we are focusing on second and third graders.

We have a suggested book list available HERE which includes books about Dr. King and other wonderful books by authors who are people of color. These are just suggestions, of course, and you may have your own favorites. Additionally, some of these books may be easier to find than others. Two independent bookstores are cooperating with us on this project by making as many titles as they can, available for purchase:

* Tidepool Bookshop https://www.tidepoolbookshop.com/, which is offering a 10% discount on all books for the drive;
* Root and Press https://rootandpress.com/, which will donate a third book if you buy two.

Please consider purchasing a book at one of these stores, if you can, either by visiting the store or calling in your order; Once purchased, they will set aside the books for us to pick up. Alternatively, we at WAMS would be happy to do your shopping for you with your donation. We had great fun buying books with the generous donations we received last year. To DONATE, please click here or mail a check payable to Worcester Area Mission Society to 6 Institute Rd., Worcester, MA 01609. Please note “books” on the check.

Thank you for helping children embrace the joys and opportunities of reading. Warmest wishes for a healthy and happy fall for you and those you love.
